GemWin Technical
Microsoft's .Net framework and the C# programming language plus some smart 3rd party tools
have very effectively met the needs of exSITEz customers, and allow
new feature to be added as they are identified. GEMWin had a
major upgrade in 2006 to take advantage of newer technologies, and
is constantly evolving in response to customer requirements.
No actual installation is necessary for GEMWin itself but a prerequisite for
deployment is that the .Net framework 2.0 must be installed, preferably on a
Windows XP or Vista machine. Typically the framework is
already preinstalled on newer machines, but it is available for free download
from Microsoft and is simple to install. Versions 3 and 3.5 of
the framework are compatible as they include .Net 2.0.
GEMWin's memory requirements on the client are no more demanding than for
running normal office applications.
GEMWin is also extremely administrator-friendly for deployment on
application-sharing servers such as Citrix.
Deployment of the database server
software requires a Windows family machine. Ideally it is hosted on
server-class hardware under a server operating system (Windows Server 2003
or later).
However, a standalone installation of GEMWin and database server
is supported, for instance on Windows XP or Vista.
Whilst it's not a deployment model that we would recommend, GEMWin's efficient design means that it is even possible
to run GEMWin over an internet link (such as a VPN) to a remote database server with very good performance for most functions.
